General Aspects of Nannying
Relationship with Parents. A good relationship between parents and nanny is essential for the child to benefit from the shared care situation. All areas of the day care should be discussed.
A (written) contract is highly recommended, covering things such as hours, salary, sick pay, overtime, notice, special needs, required diet etc. to develop a relationship of mutual trust and respect. All problems should be discussed openly as soon as they arise so that there are no bad feelings. These discussions should be kept confidential in respect for both the parents and the nanny.
Routine. All children like some form of a routine. As nanny you should arrange times for playing, reading, taking them out regularly and generally providing a stimulating environment. You should allow lots of times throughout the day for conversation with the child/children, as well as plenty of rest opportunities and quiet time, particularly for children under 2 years.
Diet. A suitable, balanced diet, including fresh fruit and vegetables should be provided and any special needs (allergies, culture, religion etc.) catered for.
Setting Boundaries. There are many varied opinions as to acceptable behaviour from children. This should be discussed in detail with the parents, preferably before commencing the position. You should come to a mutual understanding and arrangement regarding the type of intervention and discipline to be used.
Smoking. It is strongly advised that the nanny does not smoke in the presence of the children, in the family home or during the working hours.
